Re. Oshkosh City Council Election Resuls

According to the unofficial election results posted on the Winnebago County Clerk's web page, yesterday's Oshkosh City Council runoff election was another squeaker. Similar to the primary results, nobody got anywhere near a majority of the vote, the biggest plurality winner being Scheuermann with a mere 19.81%. This means that, once again, it is theoretically possible that any one of them, including any of the losers," could have beaten ALL of the others in one-on-one contests. The plurality differences between the adjacently ranked candidates are tiny, with the exception of Cheryl Hentz. Scheuermann's first place is less than 2% better than Bryan Bain's 2nd place finish, while the adjacent differences between 2nd place Bain, 3rd place Mattox and 4th place Poesch are all within 1% of each other. The gap between 5th place Jungwirth and Poeschl is less then 3%, and Hentz trailed the pack by about 13%, the largest gap
in the race.

These results are quite dubious. If it easily within the realm of theoretical possibility that some of these "winners" DO NOT represent the WILL OF THE PEOPLE, and that the wrong ones "won" because of our lousy election rule stipulating that the candidates with the largest pluralities of the vote shall be the "winners."

Place, Candidate, Plurality, #Votes, %Dif, #Dif:
1 Meredith Scheuermann 19.81% 5,808 1.87% 547
2 Bryan L. Bain 17.94% 5,261 0.75% 220
3 Shirley Mattox 17.19% 5,041 0.79% 232
4 Brian Poeschl 16.40% 4,809 0.89% 262
5 Joe Jungwirth 15.51% 4,547 2.55% 746
6 Cheryl Hentz 12.96% 3,801 12.78% 3749
Write-in 0.18% 52

You raise some interesting points. I'm curious how you would like to see city elections run if when you have three at-large seats available and six candidates running. I don't mean this sarcastically or negatively; I am curious as to your preferred method of the election process. Thank you!
